The last thing a getaway should be is stressful.
Enter the art of minimalism; a beautiful, simplistic, back-to-basics way of being that can help make your vacation time more relaxed and enjoyable. A getaway should be about unwinding your mind, restoring your energy, experiencing the unexperienced, and taking in a new perspective. That’s why when it comes to packing – the less you take, the better.
If you’d like to prioritize experiences over possessions on your next vacay, here are the only 5 things you really need to think about packing. Now, isn’t that liberating?
One Core Outfit
Why not give yourself a break from making decisions about what to wear? Every decision we make throughout the day takes up little bits of mental energy (this is called decision fatigue), so the more we do to cut them out – the better. Pack as many variations as you need of one core outfit (including basics, of course), and you’ll be giving yourself more time to spend on doing what you actually want to do on your trip. Oh, and your core outfit should always include protective items – like a hat if you’re heading somewhere sunny.
It’s important to stick to your skincare routine and care for your complexion with consistency. When you’re transitioning into another climate, no matter how slightly different the temperature might be, your skin will know it – keep feeding it the nutrients it needs to stay healthy, even when you’re in another time zone. To pack your skincare efficiently, get a hold of some travel sized containers and bottles. Squeeze the perfect amount of cleanser, moisturizer, body butter, and importantly, sun screen, you think you’ll need. This will save you precious suitcase space, and make your luggage much lighter.
A good book
Whether it’s a novel or a journal – something to read, or write in, is always a good idea. A trip with your favorite E-Reader or physical book is the way to go. Taking a book about the history or nature of the place you’re going to will add extra intrigue and wonder to your vacation. Journaling about the activities you did is also a great way to wind down each night!
An Eco-Friendly Tote Bag
Fold a tote bag into your suitcase so you have a compact, but handy, bag to use during the day on your trip – especially useful if you plan on going to the beach or shopping local products. A tote bag will save you (and the environment) from having to use plastic bags – and many of them nowadays are made with snap locks to keep your valuables safe.
Self-Cooling Water Bottle
Keeping well-hydrated is non-negotiable. When you step outside your day-today routine, you need to be a bit more mindful of what you put into your body. A self-cooling water bottle is the safest way to ensure you always have a cool sip of water – no matter where you are. Listen to your body and it’ll thank you for it.
As a passionate, loving, and ambitious person (which most of us are), you may have a tendency to overload your days with tasks.
And while keeping busy is a great way to keep moving forward, we have to make sure we don’t forget to focus on the wellbeing of person at the heart of it all: ourselves.
The beautiful thing is, that true self care is all about simple everyday acts. It’s the small baseline things that end up making the biggest difference when they’re done consistently, and you don’t need to go out of your way to achieve them.
A simple self-care checklist to make sure that you’re taking care of yourself, while accomplishing goals and taking care of others, is a great way to stay on track.
Because, really, taking care of you is actually the most selfless thing of all.
So how about we start right now?
Am I drinking enough water?
Water is the source of life. While there’s no actual indicator as to exactly how much water we should be drinking, 8 glasses a day is a good minimum to work to. Dehydration affects our brain and our mood, so keeping well-hydrated is the first step to feeling good.
Am I getting enough sleep?
When it comes to taking good care of yourself, getting enough sleep is non-negotiable. If you have trouble getting a full night’s shut-eye, a little lavender oil near your pillow will help you nod off gently.
Am I eating 3 nutritious meals a day ( and making room for snacks)?
When life gets too frantic, our routines can drop off. Eating wholesome, nutritious food is the best way to keep energy levels up in a natural way. And make sure you always carry around a healthy snack in your handbag – a handful of almonds, punnet of blueberries, or a granola bar are great to-go options.
Am I setting boundaries?
It’s ok to say no and decline invites if – especially if saying ‘no’ is going to allow you to rest and improve your wellbeing. You can always be polite and honor the invitation, but it’s important to stand up for your needs.
Am i reviewing my priorities?
Every day, look at your list of priorities and group them into two buckets: ‘urgent’ and ‘nice-to-do’. Get your urgent tasks done first, and if you have the time and energy – you can tackle some from the ‘nice-to-do’ list.
Am i spending any time in nature?
Humans are naturally inclined to feel good when out in nature – and multiple studies have shown that spending time outside improves wellbeing and productivity. Set some time aside to go for a walk, take a hike, or go for a swim in nature every day – even if it’s just 30 minutes. Your body will thank you for it.
Am I feeding my soul?
What is it you really love doing? Is it reading, crocheting, playing soccer, doing yoga, or painting? No matter what your soul-feeding activity is, you need to make it a priority.
Am i spending time with people who ‘get’ me?
Find your tribe. Start a sisterhood, or brotherhood, of supportive people who want nothing more than to see you thrive. Maybe you already have a strong support system, but if you don’t – create one.
Am I conscious of my self-talk?
Make it a habit to speak kindly to yourself. Negative self-talk and criticism is so easy – being kind takes a little more consciousness and effort, but is so very worth it.
Nourish your skin to nurture yourself.
Hey, there, sugar. Did you know that one of the largest detoxification organs on our bodies is actually our skin? That means it’s just as important to show the same level of care to the skin on our bodies as we do to the skin on our faces.

As well as a Raw Coconut + Mango variety (whose benefits you can read all about here), and a Pineapple + Maqui Berry + Coconut variety – whose wonderful myriad of benefits you can learn all about below.
A natural exfoliator
Pineapples are abundant in AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) that work to exfoliate and gently remove dead cells. This delicious-smelling tropical fruit helps to renew and refresh the skin – revealing a brighter, clearer, healthier complexion.
It’s soothing and calming
There’s a key active enzyme in pineapple called bromelain. Bromelain is an effective anti-inflammatory substance that works to soothe and calm the skin.
Vitamin C rich
Pineapples are rich in Vitamin C, which helps in cell and tissue repair and even boosts collagen production. This helps with skin elasticity and firmness. The antioxidants in pineapples work to keep free radicals away from happy, healthy skin cells.
Superfood for the skin
The Maqui berry (pronounced mah’ key) is a true superfood for the skin. Considered to be one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits in the world — Maqui berries have up to 300% more Anthocyanins and nearly 150% more Polyphenols than any other fruit or vegetable. It’s these unmatched Anthocyanins and Polyphenols levels that make the Maqui berry powerful in healing and smoothing out the skin.
Pure, natural moisture
Dry skin, be gone – coconut oil is among the best moisturizing ingredients out there. It’s easily absorbed by your skin and seeps right into your pores – deeply and throughly hydrating it.
Vitamin E infused
Vitamin E is incredibly powerful at protecting skin cells from damage, and the Vitamin E in coconut oil works to soothe and calm the skin.
It’s full of protein, antiviral and anti-fungal benefits
The antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties of coconut oil are directly attributed to the fatty acids in the oil, which include capric acid, caprylic acid, and lauric acid. This helps heal the skin and leave it feeling soft and refreshed. Coconut oil is also really abundant in a variety of different proteins. These proteins work to keep skin healthy and rejuvenated – inside and out.
Ahhh, a tropical vacation.
Nothing makes us feel as connected to Mother Nature as a swim beneath the sea, peeking glimpses at little schools of fish and navigating our way through the coral.
While swimsuits, sunglasses, and sandals are obvious must-packs – there’s a little more to think about in terms of your off-duty beauty regimen. Salt water can be beautifully rejuvenating for your skin – but coupled with sunshine, it can also dry you out. With a tiny bit of extra effort, you can keep your skin looking nourished and glowing in any kind of weather.
Don’t be a scrooge on the SPF
Most tropical vacays involve a little bit of sun worshipping – so you’re going to need a pack a little ammunition. A powerful SPF will help see you through all your outdoor activities, no matter the temperature. A strong 50+ is necessary, and try to look for one that’s non-greasy to avoid any potential breakouts.
Nourishing lip balm
Something all beauty gurus will tell you about your week beneath the palms? Do not neglect your lips. Your lips can burn just as easily as your cheeks, so make sure you have a moisturizing, SPF lip balm on hand at all times. Re-apply after every meal, swim, and cocktail. No compromise.
Butter me up!
Just like your sun-care regimen, you will need to keep on top of your daily body moisture routine. The salt, sun and fun will inevitably dry out your skin, so make sure you lather on a rich, vitamin-packed body butter after every shower or bath (See Raw Sugar’s range of body butters here). This is your number one tool in keeping skin looking lovely and dewy.
Healing aloe vera gel
If, somehow, you do end up with a little bit of sunburn – don’t be alarmed. You don’t have to suffer through a series of painful, sleepless nights and even more painful showers – aloe vera is here to help. An aloe vera gel will help cool and soothe the skin so you don’t have that burning sensation hanging over your head like a dark could on your sunny holiday.

Don’t forget about H2o!
But, wait, isn’t it humid on tropical islands? Yes it is, but because you’ll be out in the sun all day and most likely enjoying a few cocktails – your body will get dehydrated… fast. And we know that dehydration is the fastest way to harm your skin. Keep hydrated by always having a big bottle of water handy – and remember, drink a big glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you consume.
Now that you’re good to go… enjoy your trip!
Buying skincare online can be a nerve-racking experience. What if it doesn’t work? What if it makes you break out? What about the company’s policies on animal-testing? There are so many questions that loom large – but don’t fret, because Raw Sugar won’t do any of those things. Instead, we’ll answer all your pressing questions – and be totally open about the answers.
We’ve been asked plenty of things in the time we’ve been around, and we definitely notice that there are certain questions that pop up time and time again – the things our customers seem to be really interested in. Well, here they are, all in one place, all answered, all honest. Let’s take it away.
Is your glycerin derived from animal fat or plant-based? And if animal, what animal?
You’ll be pleased to learn that NO, our glycerin is not derived from animal fat – we use a plant-based vegetable glycerin in our products. Raw Sugar is cruelty-free and proud of it.
Is Raw Sugar vegan?
Yes! All our products are vegan except for one – our Raw Sugar Facial Polish as it contains honey. That said, we have plenty of customers who lead vegan lifestyles and love Raw Sugar!
Are your products gluten free?
Yup! They sure are. You won’t find any traces of gluten in our products.
What exactly does the ingredient listed as ‘fragrance’ contain?
Good question. Our proprietary fragrances are made from a combination of naturally-derived essential oils along with synthetic ingredients, without the use of any nasty toxins such as: Parabens, Phthalates or Sulfates.
Are Raw Sugar products hypoallergenic?
Hmmm, as with any tricky skin concerns – we recommend having a discussion with your physician on what products are safe to use on your skin. We do not make any claims about our products being hypoallergenic.
Do you ship worldwide?
Not yet – but we’re working on it! We really want you to have some #rawlovin wherever you are in the world, so we are currently in discussions with several retailers internationally and will be announcing more information about this in the near future. Watch this space.
Can I purchase Raw Sugar in any shops?
Yes! Raw Sugar is available at Target – just look for the bamboo tops and white bottles in the skincare aisle.
