Whether you’re a hard working career woman, student or entrepreneur, it’s often easy to forget that a whole other world exists outside your everyday routine. A world that perhaps involves sleep-ins, self-indulgence, and dare we say it – “me” time.
You’ve heard the phrase ‘After all, you’re only human’, after you’ve made a mistake or misjudged a situation. Our flaws, personalities and individual traits are what creates the wonderful world and society that we live in. Nobody is perfect, and when we are living in a world full of pressures and expectations, it can be easy to slide off the train tracks for a little while. Whatever your situation may be, there are always lessons to learn from and ways to improve yourself. Instead of beating yourself up about a mistake or failure, let’s look at some ways that you can grow and benefit from such situations:
The last thing a getaway should be is stressful.
Enter the art of minimalism; a beautiful, simplistic, back-to-basics way of being that can help make your vacation time more relaxed and enjoyable. A getaway should be about unwinding your mind, restoring your energy, experiencing the unexperienced, and taking in a new perspective. That’s why when it comes to packing – the less you take, the better.
If you’d like to prioritize experiences over possessions on your next vacay, here are the only 5 things you really need to think about packing. Now, isn’t that liberating?
One Core Outfit
Why not give yourself a break from making decisions about what to wear? Every decision we make throughout the day takes up little bits of mental energy (this is called decision fatigue), so the more we do to cut them out – the better. Pack as many variations as you need of one core outfit (including basics, of course), and you’ll be giving yourself more time to spend on doing what you actually want to do on your trip. Oh, and your core outfit should always include protective items – like a hat if you’re heading somewhere sunny.
It’s important to stick to your skincare routine and care for your complexion with consistency. When you’re transitioning into another climate, no matter how slightly different the temperature might be, your skin will know it – keep feeding it the nutrients it needs to stay healthy, even when you’re in another time zone. To pack your skincare efficiently, get a hold of some travel sized containers and bottles. Squeeze the perfect amount of cleanser, moisturizer, body butter, and importantly, sun screen, you think you’ll need. This will save you precious suitcase space, and make your luggage much lighter.
A good book
Whether it’s a novel or a journal – something to read, or write in, is always a good idea. A trip with your favorite E-Reader or physical book is the way to go. Taking a book about the history or nature of the place you’re going to will add extra intrigue and wonder to your vacation. Journaling about the activities you did is also a great way to wind down each night!
An Eco-Friendly Tote Bag
Fold a tote bag into your suitcase so you have a compact, but handy, bag to use during the day on your trip – especially useful if you plan on going to the beach or shopping local products. A tote bag will save you (and the environment) from having to use plastic bags – and many of them nowadays are made with snap locks to keep your valuables safe.
Self-Cooling Water Bottle
Keeping well-hydrated is non-negotiable. When you step outside your day-today routine, you need to be a bit more mindful of what you put into your body. A self-cooling water bottle is the safest way to ensure you always have a cool sip of water – no matter where you are. Listen to your body and it’ll thank you for it.
Sensitive-skinned sugars, this one’s for you.
Hey sugar, we know that the beautiful sensitive-skinned souls among us need a little extra #Rawlovin – and we also know that winter winds and dropping temperatures can sometimes reduce our skin’s moisture levels and deplete its natural defenses. Say hello to your brand new skin heroes:
ColdPress Hand Wash Green Tea, Cucumber + Aloe Vera
ColdPress Body Wash Green Tea, Cucumber + Aloe Vera
ColdPress Natural Hand Wash Almond Milk, Manuka Honey + Oatmeal
ColdPress Body Wash Almond Milk, Manuka Honey + Oatmeal
So, what will these ingredients do for my sensitive skin?
Green Tea is an antioxidant by nature, working hard to reduce signs of ageing and soothe the skin in the most gentle way possible. The energizing scent of Green Tea will have an uplifting and joyous effect on you – making you radiate from the inside out.
Additionally, green tea acts as a gentle exfoliator and is also blessed with the power of tannins which help to perk up and lift your complexion.
It’s simple, it’s made up of 90% water, but it’s your sensitive skin’s very best friend. Super-soothing and ultra-cooling, cucumber can be used on even the most fragile of complexions and make it feel like heaven. It’s incredible at minimizing pores and evening out skin tone. The Vitamin C and caffeic acid in cucumbers are also antioxidants that work towards slowing the appearance of wrinkles and creases.
A variety of vitamins. A medley of minerals. Spades of enzymes. A bunch of amino acids. One little plant: Aloe Vera. The ultimate healer for sensitive skin, Aloe vera is both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial – meaning it’s powerful in protecting sensitive skin against infections and warding off germs. It helps with skin regeneration and even softens dead skin cells – making them easy to remove and rinse off in a gentle way.
Aloe vera also helps with pigmentation – it can minimize the appearance of freckles, brown spots and blotchiness.
Almond Milk allows you to make peace with your sensitive skin. Incredible in its ability to soothe the skin, Almond Milk is rich in Vitamin E – which deeply nourishes and keeps skin cells supple, while replenishing dehydrated complexions and locking moisture in through your pores.
Vitamin E is also incredibly effective in renewing skin cells – perfect if your skin’s had a bit too much sun.
FUN FACT TIME: Did you know that honey contains 22 amino acids, 27 minerals and 5000 enzymes? Extraordinary stuff, right?!
Manuka honey is one of nature’s purest ingredients – and boy does it LOVE skin! In fact, Manuka Honey loves ALL skin types – including that of the sensitive sort. Its healing powers work wonders in soothing skin – and its range of antioxidants is wonderful at smoothing it out. It provides skin with a natural moisture, so there’s no need for any harsh chemicals. It’s also naturally antibacterial, which means it helps fight acne and breakouts in the most natural, non-irritating way.
Oatmeal is a wonderful remedy for sensitive skin – and one that’s been used around the world historically to soothe itchiness and irritation.
Oat lipids and proteins help to rejuvenate the skin barrier and keep it strong, helping to combat dryness and itchiness. Oats are also enriched with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which work to ease sensitivity and even slow down aging.
The word ‘detox’ gets thrown around an awful lot lately. From detox teas to detox day-spas – it seems to have become a commonly-used buzzword that advertisers wield to get their products out the door. But ‘detox’ does not have to be a dirty word.
In fact, a detox can be incredibly beneficial to your health (and, in turn, your skin!). It’s a science. The science of how our bodies get rid of unnecessary waste – because if waste builds up, bad things happen.
A skin detox means devoting one whole week to making and effort to remove impurities, toxins, pollutants, and dead skin cells – and to renew and revitalize your complexion back to optimum health and all-round glowy-ness. Or, if you detox really well, you can have it looking better, fresher, and more beautiful than ever.
But how do you know if your skin is in desperate need of a detox, you ask? Well, every now again, your body tries to talk to you. It tries to send you signals in the hopes that you’ll respond and take action. These signals are often what we like to refer to as symptoms. That means that right now, you body could be screaming at you with a loud and clear “DETOX ME! PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF AVOCADO ON TOAST, DETOX ME!” while you nonchalantly strut around without a care in the world, twiddling your thumbs and watching re-runs of Gilmore Girls. But, fret not, that’s why we’re here!
So, without further ado, here are 10 signs your skin may be in need of a detox. If you’ve noticed any of the below recurring in the past 3 months, you’ll need to whip out the water, get onto a liver-friendly diet, and treat your skincare routine with respect.
1. Increased skin sensitivity
2. Breakouts that just. Won’t. End.
3. Skin dullness
4. Excessive sweating
5. White or yellow-coated tongue (this could also manifest as bad breath)
6. Itchy, irritable skin
7. Increased dryness or flakiness
8. Cravings (for sugar, in particular)
9. Tummy bloating
10. Sinus congestion
If you listen to your body, and treat it as well as you would a brand new pair of white sneakers, you’ll be absolutely fine.
If you often end the week with a froster full of vegetables that hasn’t been touched and bowl full of fruit you haven’t eaten – you’re not alone. In fact, around 25% of our total grocery shop ends up in the trash. That means that almost a quarter of all foodstuffs we buy go to waste.
But, alas, there is a solution. Why not turn uneaten foods into natural cleaning products? Aside from minimizing waste, this strategy has other benefits too. By using all-natural household products, you avoid exposing yourself and your family to unnecessarily harsh chemicals – particularly in the kitchen. It’s safe, it’s eco-friendly, and importantly – it works.
Without further ado, here are our top 5 most effective natural cleaners.
With its medley of antiseptic and antibacterial properties, lemon has the natural strength to kill germs and even remove stains. Their high acidity levels mean they can also act as a bleaching agent – so they’re perfect for brightening up bathroom and kitchen tiles. Mix lemon juice with water to form mother nature’s ultimate cleanser and use it to wash dishes, surfaces and wipe off stains.
Much like lemon, vinegar is high in acidity – so it’s powerful in killing germs and warding off nasty bacteria. Simply mix one part vinegar to two parts water in a large spray bottle, and there you have it – a brand new, healthy and natural surface cleaner. For really tough cleaning, just use it straight outta the bottle.
3. Banana peel
Here’s one that might surprise you; banana peel! Instead of tossing your banana peel into the trash, make a beeline for the cutlery drawer. Simply blend the skins with a little bit of water to form a paste and use it to polish your silverware – we promise you it’ll be shinier than ever.
4. Tea bags
Tea is full of tannins, which means it’s super effective in polishing wooden surfaces like cabinets and floors. Just make sure you allow them to cool first. BONUS: If you want to keep your fridge smelling fresh and clean, keep some Green Tea leaves inside it to eliminate any nasty odors!
Got some scrubbing to do? Reach for the salt. Salt works really well as an abrasive cleaner – use it to remove gunk from pans, showers, and floors. When you mix salt with a little bit of water, however, you crate a saline solution that works really well to remove stains from the carpet and clothes.
Discovering a brand new place in the world is the one of the most wondrous experiences life has to offer. But, sadly, it’s so often is the case that when we arrive at our destination after hours of travel – our skin doesn’t quite match the level of excitement we feel. In fact it can appear dull, exhausted, and just downright unhappy. And it has good reason to – planes are depressurized so the air pulls the moisture right out of your face, leaving it dehydrated and desperately thirsty for some sweet TLC.
That begs the question – how do you avoid a travel skincare disaster and incorporate your usual Raw Sugar skincare routine into travel time? Follow our guide to beauty on the road and your skin won’t even know it has entered a new timezone. Promise.
1. The night before
The evening before a big trip plays a crucial role in how smoothly your vacay will go. Have you packed everything you need? Dropped the dog off at the sitter’s? Charged your laptop? It’s totally make or break. Same goes for your skin. Make sure your complexion is well-prepped ahead of travel by thoroughly cleansing with a Raw Sugar Facial Cleanser, sloughing away dead skin cells with our Facial Polish, and feeding it a big spoonful of moisture with our Complete Facial Moisturizer. This will allow your skin to build up its natural barrier and be equipped with the tools to fight that dreaded in-flight dryness.
2. Inside-out hydration
There’s no better way to feel good ahead your trip than to nourish and hydrate your body. Drink lots (and lots) of water, and fill up on antioxidant-rich foods such as citrus fruits, leafy greens, and berries. Yummy.
3. Beauty on-board
Make sure your on-board beauty kit is on-point. Stock up on some mini travel-friendly bottles or tubs (airplanes don’t allow anything over 3.4 ounces (100 ml) on board). Fill them up with Raw Sugar’s Facial Cleanser, Facial Moisturizer, Hand Sanitizer (for keeping hands germ-free before meals and before-and-after bathroom breaks), and Body Butter. Place all your items in one clear bag for easy access.
Hot tip: it’s a good idea to buy travel bottles that come with ready-made labels – that way, you know you won’t confuse your facial moisturizer with your body butter.
4. Fresh-faced, baby!
Once you’re on-board and ready to get really comfy with a movie, novel, or some well-earned sleep – take the time to gently wash all traces of your makeup off with Raw Sugar’s Reviving Facial Cleanser. This is prevent your pores from clogging and give your skin some breathing space.
5. Moisturize… and then moisturize some more
This one goes for both face AND body, sugar. If you want to ward off skin dryness and dehydration – you’ll need to bring your moisturizing A-game with you. After you’ve carefully cleansed your face to wash off any makeup or oils, apply our Complete Facial Moisturizer liberally. Don’t be shy to re-apply throughout the duration of the flight – your skin needs all the moisture it can get in a depressurized cabin! You’ll also want to slather our Body Butter all over – paying extra careful attention to hands, elbows and knees.
6. Skip the junk… and the wine
When you’re on a long flight and you’ve exhausted your personal film-watching quota, it can be tempting to kill time (and boredom) with a glass of wine or a bar of chocolate. Alcohol will only dehydrate your body and sugar will make you crash – not in a good way, in a groggy and tired way. Stick to water and healthy snacks to keep your skin hydrated and yourself refreshed.
7. Start fresh
And then, when you’ve arrived where you were going – you get to do it all again! Yipee!
Buying skincare online can be a nerve-racking experience. What if it doesn’t work? What if it makes you break out? What about the company’s policies on animal-testing? There are so many questions that loom large – but don’t fret, because Raw Sugar won’t do any of those things. Instead, we’ll answer all your pressing questions – and be totally open about the answers.
We’ve been asked plenty of things in the time we’ve been around, and we definitely notice that there are certain questions that pop up time and time again – the things our customers seem to be really interested in. Well, here they are, all in one place, all answered, all honest. Let’s take it away.
Is your glycerin derived from animal fat or plant-based? And if animal, what animal?
You’ll be pleased to learn that NO, our glycerin is not derived from animal fat – we use a plant-based vegetable glycerin in our products. Raw Sugar is cruelty-free and proud of it.
Is Raw Sugar vegan?
Yes! All our products are vegan except for one – our Raw Sugar Facial Polish as it contains honey. That said, we have plenty of customers who lead vegan lifestyles and love Raw Sugar!
Are your products gluten free?
Yup! They sure are. You won’t find any traces of gluten in our products.
What exactly does the ingredient listed as ‘fragrance’ contain?
Good question. Our proprietary fragrances are made from a combination of naturally-derived essential oils along with synthetic ingredients, without the use of any nasty toxins such as: Parabens, Phthalates or Sulfates.
Are Raw Sugar products hypoallergenic?
Hmmm, as with any tricky skin concerns – we recommend having a discussion with your physician on what products are safe to use on your skin. We do not make any claims about our products being hypoallergenic.
Do you ship worldwide?
Not yet – but we’re working on it! We really want you to have some #rawlovin wherever you are in the world, so we are currently in discussions with several retailers internationally and will be announcing more information about this in the near future. Watch this space.
Can I purchase Raw Sugar in any shops?
Yes! Raw Sugar is available at Target – just look for the bamboo tops and white bottles in the skincare aisle.
