RAW THOUGHTS

10 easy ways to give back this holiday season

Now that the holidays are upon, ’tis the season for taking a step back, getting cozy in a lounge chair, and indulging in life’s simplest gifts. It’s also the season of gratitude and giving back. Because if there’s anything the countless Christmas movies we’ve watched over the years have taught us, it’s that being generous is always a good idea.

When you perform acts of kindness – be they big or small – you’re positively impacting the world, and yourself, much more than you might think. Good deeds have a ripple effect – they encourage you to give again, inspire your recipient to do the same, and motivate people around you to act with kindness, too.

Because during a season that promotes overconsumption, a little giving goes a very long way.

1. Pick a reputable charity

Before opening your check book or logging into your PayPal account, do some research. Find a charity you feel passionate about through sites like Volunteer Match, Guidestar and Charity Navigator – all great resources for choosing the right nonprofit for you, and making sure it’s a reputable one.

2. Volunteer at a local food shelter or soup kitchen

It’s cold out, and many people are hungry. Dedicating a day to volunteering at a soup kitchen not only means you’re feeding those less fortunate, it’s also a great opportunity to talk to people from different walks of life and gain a new perspective.

3. Donate cans to a food bank

Collect a bunch of food cans, donate them to a food bank, and help reduce the amount of people who are hungry this holiday season. It’s a simple but effective way to lend a helping hand.

4. Donate your old jackets, coats and woolies

You know those old coats you have sitting in the far corner of your wardrobe? The ones you haven’t worn in months… or perhaps even years? Yeah, those ones. Group them into a bag and donate them to a charity to help keep someone else warm during the winter.

5. Buy books for the homeless

Books can change lives. They can ignite our imaginations, awaken new ideas and perspectives, teach us things we didn’t know, or simply allow us to get lost in a fantasy world that isn’t our own.

6. Donate blood

Save a life; donate blood. The American Red Cross encourages people to be blood donors, and your donation will really make a difference. In fact, just one pint of donated blood can save up to three lives. Scared of needles? You can just donate your blood instead!

7. Volunteer at an animal shelter

Spend some time caring for (and cuddling!) furry friends at a shelter over the holidays. Or, you can simply donate blankets, food and pet toys and treats.

8. Treat your neighbors

Connect with your community through small acts of kindness. Bake some cookies for the people next door. Make a batch of muffins for the old lady across the street. Invite a family over for dinner one night. Bask in the festive spirit.

9. Call an old friend

The holidays are a great time to re-connect with people you haven’t heard from in a while. Why not call that friend you haven’t spoken to in years? It’ll make their day – and maybe yours, too.

10. Give a compliment a day

Sometimes, making someone’s day can be as simple as a compliment. A comment of praise on a friend’s delicious homemade pumpkin soup. A appreciative remark on your co-worker’s joyous laugh. A few flattering words to waitstaff about their attentive approach. The only catch? It has to be genuine.

And hey, you may just love the feeling of giving to others so much that your generous festive spirit lives on well past Christmas.

6 WAYS TO KICK-START YOUR GRATITUDE PRACTICE

Every year, when the calendar pointer hits January 1st, we bask in the glow of a new year.

A fresh start. A clean slate. A renewed optimism. It’s an innate part of human nature – we look for opportunities to clear the proverbial canvas and start anew.

For some, that means creating a list of New Years resolutions; exercise more, indulge less. For others, it’s the physical act of making a monumental life change; be that starting a new job or moving to a new city. But for most of us, an effective fresh start needs to begin on the inside. And it can be as simple as expressing a little bit of good ol’ fashioned gratitude.

Being thankful for the gifts of life has many health benefits. Studies have shown it can reduce feelings of depression, decrease anxiety, improve quality of sleep, and even strengthen memory.

Here are a few easy ways to kick-start your gratitude practice – for a more centred, content you.

1. Daily top 3

Each day, consider three things you feel grateful for. They could be as simple as your warming morning tea or the delicious taste of your favorite fruit – or as profound as the roof over your head and clean drinking water. Tune in to the small details that make your life what it is, and take notice of what you might be taking for granted. It’s amazing what you see when you start paying attention.

2. Express gratitude to others

Show your appreciation to someone who did something kind – be it a total stranger or your best friend. Letting people know you acknowledged and appreciated their help will make you feel lighter and more joyous.

3. Focus on the good

Make it a habit to take time and focus on the things you’re thankful for in your life. Make a list of them in your mind, and say a big, earnest “thank you” for each one of them.

4. Acknowledge the struggles

It’s also important to focus on your struggles you’ve gone through, and say thanks for the unexpected ways you have gained from them. Maybe they uncovered a strength you didn’t know you had, or perhaps they brought you closer to your family, or revealed to you your true priorities. Be grateful for the tough times themselves, rather than the silver linings, because they may continue to offer you blessings you otherwise wouldn’t have.

5. Make it a mantra

Never underestimate the power of words. When you feel tense, stressed or sad – simply repeat the words “thank you” between  deep, slow breaths to re-ground yourself. Sit in silence and really meditate on the words.

6. Pay it forward

A little kindness goes a long way. And one of the most meaningful ways to express gratitude is to act with kindness towards others. Return a favor. Surprise someone. See a situation you might be able to offer some help in and do it. The feeling afterwards will be golden.

5 things you didn’t know about coconut

The truth about nature’s wonder fruit.

Coconuts truly are the gift that keeps on giving.

Aside from being considered both a fruit, a nut, AND a seed (overachiever, anyone?) – coconuts are one of the most versatile of nature’s creations.

So much so, that according to the Coconut Research Center (yes, it’s a real place), in many parts of Southeast Asia, India, and the Philippines – the coconut tree is known as “the tree of life.” And for good reason, because incredibly – over 1500 studies have been published as evidence of the pure health benefits of the humble coconut.

Boasting lauric acid, potassium, cytokinin and electrolytes – coconut can help to improve skin and hair, slow aging, aid weight loss, and improve immunity. But that’s not all. There are many surprising benefits that coconuts offer that you may not know about. Since we’d never want you to miss out, we’ve compiled the top 5 things you may not know about coconut.

1. It can improve memory

Say what?! Yep, it’s true – coconut oil can improve cognitive function. Recent studies at Oxford University have revealed that people with signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia had short term memory benefits from its use. Remember that the next time you’re feeling a little… forgetful.

2. It can boost your metabolism

While it may seem a little strange that a fatty product could actually help with your metabolism, it’s true. How? Coconut oil helps you oxidise (aka burn) fat. It contains medium chain triglycerides which actually works to boost metabolic function and have you feelin’ fine.

3. It’s a natural deodorant

Say bye-bye to BO! Coconut oil is a great alternative to conventional deodorant. It contains Laurie acid he lauric acid which kills odor-causing bacteria. Simply apply it to your skin to ward off any unpleasant smells. Easy.

4. It’s an energy booster

Want to amp your morning smoothie up a little? Add a teaspoon of coconut oil. When paired with protein, particularly chia seeds, coconut oil’s medium chain triglycerides offer the perch pick-me-up.

5. It can stop gum disease in its tracks

Did you know that some people use coconut oil as a toothpaste? Other simply use the oil pulling method for healthier mouth and gums. Because of its wonderful antibacterial properties, some dental professionals believe that coconut oil can work to prevent tooth decay and gum diseases.

BONUS fact:

Coconuts have been keeping people healthy for 55 million years!

While we in the Western world may only have just discovered (and bottled) coconuts –  the truth is that ever since coconuts first appeared in tropical areas, they’ve locals as a natural elixir.

The importance of keeping hydrated… all day.

Our bodies are pretty impressive entities. They’re full of diligent cells, untiring bacteria and industrious electrolytes that work around the clock to keep the machine well-oiled and ticking along according to plan. To function properly, of course, our bodies need fuel. That fuel comes in the form of nutrients from food, from sleep, and from water. If your body loses water, and doesn’t fill it back up – things start to get a bit problematic.

When you work out, for example, you can lose around 1.5 liters (about 6 full glasses) of fluid per hour – which is a helluva lot when you consider that you have about 5 liters of blood in your body in total!

But you don’t have to be exercising to be losing fluid. You lose it simply through sweating and the normal functions of your respiratory system. And when you sweat, you lose electrolytes – which are absolutely vital for proper cell function.

If you lose too many fluids, you become dehydrated – which leads to feeling tired and fatigued, lightheaded, and gives you those much dreaded muscle pains and cramps. THIS is why you need to drink at least 2 liters of water a day to keep hydrated and healthy.

But there are also other, more noticeable things that will happen when you start drinking more water. Get your 8 glasses a day in and you’ll reap these benefits:

HEALTHIER SKIN

By cleaning your liver, water can eliminate the cause of acne and breakouts – and help prevent and decrease the appearance of wrinkles.

STRONGER TEETH AND BONES

If you’re lucky enough to live in a country with clean, healthy tap water – it has added fluoride that gives your pearly whites (and your bones) extra strength and density.

IMPROVED JOINT HEALTH

No one likes achy joints. If your body dehydrates, less synovial fluid is there to protect the joints from pain and damage.

MIND AND BODY

Did you know that water is crucial for nutrients to absorb properly? It also helps with lots of other chemical reactions in the body – like optimum brain function and memory retention.

BETTER DIGESTION

Water is essential for a well-functioning digestive system – and is vital to up keeping a healthy urinary tract. To properly metabolize food, water is critical – and even helps reduce constipation.

WEIGHT LOSS

Recent studies have shown that an increase in water intake actually works to reduce fat deposits. Drinking lots of water can also be a natural way to suppress the appetite, help with metabolizing stored fat, and leads to less consumption of sugary drinks like soda.

MORE ENERGY

Although water doesn’t directly give you burst of energy like, say, carbs do – it does play a very important part in your body’s energy levels. It’s where all your energy reactions will happen – and if you don’t drink enough water, you’ll become fatigued and lethargic.

IMPROVED MUSCLE TONE

Your muscles need electrolytes to be able to function and not cramp. Because muscles are mostly water, dehydration can stop them from properly flexing and contracting – leading to decreased muscle tone.

5 weekend rituals that’ll help you relax and prepare for the week ahead

The weekend presents the perfect opportunity to recharge your creative batteries and refill your well.

While the working week (traditional or not) is necessary to keep us engaged, motivated and stimulated – for many of us, the time between 5pm on Friday and 6am on Monday is where we fit in the things that bring us real pleasure. It’s also a good time to set up weekend rituals that drive us to lead a more purposeful everyday and make the week ahead run more smoothly.

By instilling just a few simple checkpoints into your weekend – you can set up for a more creative, focused, energetic and meaningful five days ahead.

Because a weekend well spent brings a week of content.

SATURDAY AM:

Load up on your weekly fruit and veg at the farmers’ market

By stocking up on your weekly groceries early on in the weekend, you’re immediately eliminating one thing you’ll have to think about during the week. And by hitting a fresh farmers market, what could be perceived as an arduous chore becomes an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Meet the makers. Talk to the farmers. Understanding where your food is coming from – and we promise, you’ll feel more inspired to get crafty with your meal plans and culinary creations throughout the week.

SATURDAY PM:

Go on an adventure to a new place

Whether your idea of an adventure is embarking on an epic hike up a mountain or taking a relaxed road trip to a secluded beach – exploring new terrain and reconnecting with nature is one of the best ways to reset your mind over the weekend.

Escaping the hustle of the city and tuning in to the sounds of the natural environment bring us back down to earth (pardon the pun), and in turn, makes us feel more balanced, gratified and content.

SUNDAY AM:

Make an energizing morning smoothie

Morning smoothies are a great way to feed the body a big dose of its daily vitamins in one quick go. Plus, they’re easy to make and can be prepared in less than 5 minutes. The beauty of inserting the morning smoothie ritual into your Sunday is that it’ll help you feel naturally energized and uplifted, and help ward off those dreaded #Sundayblues feels.

SUNDAY EARLY PM:

Journal your plan for the week

Pencilling in a strategic plan for the week ahead will help you gain traction and be better prepared for the next day. Because, if we’re honest – when that alarm goes off on Monday morning, many of us hit panic mode and scramble to get everything done at the very last minute before heading out the door.

Whether you’re mapping out your days, writing affirmations or creating intentions – taking a little of time to preview, consider and plan for the week will help you feel more structured, relaxed and dare we say it… excited for Monday.

SUNDAY LATE PM:

Draw a bath… and unwind

Bath time is your time to relax and put the hustle on hold. If you’re indeed blessed to live in a home that has a bath, it is a truly serene experience – and the perfect way to finish your weekend on a calm note. With the busyness and bustle of the working week, it can be hard to find the time to draw a bath between Mon-Fri – making Sunday evening your perfect window of opportunity. Plus, it’ll help ease your mind, soothe your soul, and allow you to rejuvenate and recharge in a meaningful way.

Grab a good book (or don’t!), play some chill tunes, sit back and leave the world behind. Monday will thank you for it.

7 natural ingredients that keep acne-prone skin clear

Acne. Zits. Spots. Breakouts. Whatever you want to call them, it’s safe to say – those pesky little bumps are something we could all do without.

When you slide out of your teenage years and slip into adulthood, you expect to be completely acne-free. After all, we’ve been taught that zits only affect hormonal teenagers, right? Wrong. So, so very wrong.

Acne-prone skin can be hard to handle. It can deplete your self esteem and leave you feeling like you just don’t want to leave the house. It makes you feel out of control. And often helpless (especially when you feel like you’ve tried every product on the shelves and every trick in the book.)

But there are small things you can add to your diet and skincare routine to care for acne-prone skin – and they’re probably hiding in your pantry. In turn – you’ll reduce the amount of breakouts that pop up like unexpected visitors and overstay their welcome.

Banish blemishes with these 7 easy-to-follow, clear-skin tips.

Cucumber

You know the phrase ‘cool as a cucumber’? There’s a good reason for that. Cucumber has magical cooling and soothing properties – its astringent properties help to reduce inflammation caused by acne and speeds up the healing process. Plus, it’ll keep your complexion’s pH balance in tact.

How to use it?

Apply cooled cucumber juice onto skin with a cotton pad. Drinking the cucumber juice daily will help too!

Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

We at Raw Sugar are OBSESSED with ACV. It’s great for your gut and one of the best pantry ingredients for winning the war against breakouts. It works as a toner with its antibacterial and antiseptic properties which clear the pores of bacteria and oil.

How to use it?

Drink a shot every morning! You can also dilute one part ACV to two parts water and apply to skin via a cotton pad after cleansing and before moisturizing.

Lemon

Lemon, aka nature’s skincare savior, is full of acne-fighting goodness. It contains L-ascorbic acid, a powerful astringent that works to dry out spots. What’s even better is that its antibacterial properties fight acne-producing bacteria – getting right to source.

How to use it?

Drink a glass of lemon water every day! You can also apply freshly-squeezed lemon juice to affected areas once a day.

Coconut oil

We’re nuts for coconuts. And why wouldn’t we be? It’s jam-packed with antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties that ward-off acne-triggering bacteria and microbes. All while keeping your skin hydrated and well-fed.

How to use it?

After cleansing, simply apply a small amount of extra-virgin coconut oil to your skin (trust us – a little goes a long way!).

Honey

With its potent antibiotic properties, honey is a delicious at-home anti-acne remedy. It works to eliminate the bacteria that causes breakouts, and has anti-inflammatory properties help heal and reduce redness, swelling and inflammation. Pretty sweet, huh?

How to use it?

Apply a small amount of organic honey to the skin – almost like a face mask. Allow it to absorb for 10-15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal can be used as an effective yet gentle exfoliator for acne-prone skin. It deeply cleanses your pores and absorbs excess oil –and gets rid of dead skin cells which can lead to nasty scarring.

How to use it?

Form a paste with one tablespoon of oatmeal and a little bit of milk. Massage gently into your skin and rinse off with warm water.

Turmeric

In every way possible, turmeric is golden. It’s SO full of incredible body-worshipping goodness and has countless health benefits – one of which is its anti-acne properties. The compound curcumin found in turmeric has antimicrobial activity that stops acne-causing bacteria in its tracks. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help heal acne and scars.

If you’re shopping for…

THE FITNESS FANATIC

We all have that friend. You know, the one who makes you feel guilty for *only* working out three times a week because they’re at the gym every day – morning AND night? Yep, that one. A fitness fanatic can never have enough stylish sneakers – try and find a pair that shows off a bit of their personal style. Alternatively, a super-cute, BPA-free water bottle is another goodie.

THE ECO-CONSCIOUS FRIEND

This friend is a crusader – a lover of the earth and everything in it. They’ll only buy ethically-made clothing, carry around an eco-friendly coffee cup and never, ever go to the grocery store without their big shopper bag. This guy or gal will love anything thoughtful or repurposed – think herbs in old tomato tins, cute handkerchiefs, and even organic wine (they’re sure to do something clever with the bottle after it’s been downed!).

THE HOMEBODY

This is for the buddy whose idea of a good weekend is one spent curled up in bed all day, cosy socks on and good book in hand. This person will love anything that will bring them comfort and keep them occupied on a rainy day in  – think fluffy slippers, comfy cushions or a good novel.

Men tend to enjoy gifts they can use on a regular basis, and we guarantee – he’ll be addicted!

5 top foods for a healthy gut and radiant skin

Gut health.

Sounds glamorous, right? Not so much. But it is vital for glowing skin – because good skin health truly does begin in your gut.

Taking care of your gut means you’re getting right to the source. Cutting out the middleman, if you will. It’s efficiency at its very finest. Improving your gut health will help you simplify your skin care routine – and give you countless other health benefits, too. So where’s the skin-gut connection, you wonder?

Here’s a way of looking at it that might be a wee bit easier to digest. Think of your skin like a flower, and your gut like the soil. The soil requires the right nutrients and levels of good bacteria to allow the flower to blossom. So, for your skin to be healthy and radiant, your gut needs to be first.

Here’s a nifty little list of foods that love your guts:

1. SAUERKRAUT

Sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles and many other naturally fermented foods contain healthy amounts of probiotics. These probiotics give your gut the good bacteria it needs, and organic acids that allow you to maintain a healthy intestinal pH.

2. ALMONDS

Recent studies have shown that almonds are incredible for gut health because they’re a prebiotic. Prebiotic’s are probiotic foods – ones that reach the colon undigested. They promote the growth of good bacteria in your large intestine – plus they’re packed with great dietary fibre!

3. NON-DAIRY YOGURT

Non-dairy yogurt is good for your skin for two reasons. The first is that it’s probiotic-rich, which means it loads your gut with good bacteria that will has a dynamic effect on your digestive system. The second is that it is, of course, free of dairy products – which are known to trigger acne and breakouts. None of that here, folks.

4. KOMBUCHA

Kombucha is jam-packed with gut-loving nutrients such as amino acids, enzymes and vitamins. It also contains a variety of health promoting acids that include ascetic acid – known for its prowess in killing the bad bacteria that lives in our tummies, and gluconic acid – which assists in inhibiting body infections.

5. ORGANIC APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

In its raw and organic form, Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) brims with raw enzymes and good bacteria that help work your digestive juices, help nutrients absorb, and monitor the growth of harmful yeast and bacteria in the belly.

BONUS TIP: you can also use ACV as a toner – simply dilute with two-parts water and voila!

7 WAYS TO CARE FOR DRY SKIN

Winter is SO GOOD for your skin… said literally no one ever. From dryness to flakiness and even scaliness – those few bitter and frosty months are no friend to your complexion. First you notice a dry patch on your chin, then your elbows start to get a little rougher, and then – before you know it, the skin on your hands is cracking in a desperate plea for help from this unsettling change in temperature.

But we believe cooler weather should be celebrated, not chastised. Think chunky, cozy sweaters, warm cinnamon and turmeric lattes, and nights in watching old Goldie Hawn movies by the fireplace. Heaven. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of good-to-know tips that’ll allow you to be be properly prepared for the frost and enjoy the best of the cold months flake-free and fabulous. Because, let it be said… winter is coming.

1. Don’t just moisturize… nourish.

Many people don’t know the difference between moisturizing and nourishing. But there is one. A big one. Nourishing means you get nutrients – you’re feeding your skin the good stuff, and your oil levels are being replenished. It’s richer and REALLY beneficial to dry skin.

Moisturizing, on the other hand,  means that only your hydration levels are being addressed. So, to kill two birds with one stone and attend to both dry and dehydrated skin, use a nutrient-rich, thick body butter like Raw Sugar’s Raw Coconut + Mango or Pineapple + Maqui Berry + Coconut butters – ColdPressed to lock in a bunch of skin-loving vitamins and minerals. Just what thirsty skin needs.

2. Take it easy in the shower.

When you feel the chill, fight the urge to have a hot ’n’ steamy shower. Hot showers strip your skin of its natural oil barrier, which helps keep the moisture in. To prevent this from happening, keep your shower warm, sure, but not hot. And don’t linger. A quick 5-10 minutes will ensure your skin isn’t being  stripped of its natural oils (plus it’s good for the environment!). And try to work in your body butter straight out of the shower when your pores are soft and open.

3. Be gentle with your cleanser.

Cleansers can be harsh. They’re often packed with chemicals and fragrances that dry out your precious complexion. To avoid this, use a gentle and natural skin cleanser that works to hydrate your skin as well as clean it. Raw Sugar’s Reviving Facial Cleanser does the trick – it’s packed with vitamins, fruit extracts and all-round natural goodness.

4. Glove yourself.

Our poor, precious, hardworking hands are one of the first places on our body we notice dry skin. Care for your hands and prevent them from cracking by giving them protection in the form of gloves. Get a nice pair of thick, warm ones to wear outside when it’s cold – and make sure you use rubber gloves when doing the dishes or housework that involves dunking your hands in water. Trust us – your mitts will thank you for it.

5. Sleep with a humidifier.

It’s all well and good to keep your home warm and cozy with heating in the winter, but it means that much of the moisture in the air gets sucked out. And with dry air comes dry skin. Enter the humble humidifier. Humidifiers work wonders in replenishing the moisture of the air indoors and preventing parched skin. Keep one in your bedroom for a more regulated sleeping environment.

6. Shaving matters.

Put your hand up if you stop shaving your legs in winter. Ok, that rules out 90% of you – so the other 10% that keeps their pins silky and smooth even when they’re being hidden away by stockings and leggings, listen up. Shaving can irritate dry skin – and scrape away its natural oils. To care for your skin mid-shave, always use a proper shaving cream, oil or gel – and ensure that you’re shaving in the right direction, which is against the direction of the hair growth, for those wondering. A sharp razor is also essential as blunt ones just cause added irritation to your skin.

7. Be sun smart (even when it’s cold).

The sun is one of the major causes of dry and irritated skin. And make no mistake, just because it’s not sizzling out there doesn’t mean you’re not being hit with UV rays when you’re outdoors. Your body is probably safe with all the layers you’re wearing, but be sure to use an SPF 30 sun cream (year-round, that is) on your face in addition to your makeup and/or moisturizer. And to prevent chapped lips, keep them protected with an SPF 15 lip balm and reapply regularly
