Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant: What's the Difference (and Why We Skip Aluminum)

Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant: What's the Difference (and Why We Skip Aluminum)

Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant: The Core Difference

The core difference: deodorant neutralizes odor, while antiperspirant blocks sweat glands, usually with aluminum salts, to reduce how much you sweat in the first place. Both can help you feel fresh, they just go about it in completely different ways. One masks the smell. The other tries to stop the sweat before it starts.

How Each One Works on the Body

Antiperspirants use aluminum salts that temporarily form a plug in your sweat ducts, which reduces the amount of sweat that reaches your skin's surface. Less sweat also means less food for the bacteria that cause odor, so antiperspirants take on both sweat and smell at once.

Deodorants work differently. They let your body sweat exactly as it normally would, and instead focus on the smell: odor-fighting and antibacterial ingredients go to work on the bacteria that cause odor, while fragrance covers up what's left. Think of it as managing the smell, not the sweat.

Common Issues Linked to Aluminum in Deodorant

Aluminum does its job, but it comes with a few well-documented downsides.

The most-searched complaint is yellowing on clothes, and it's not actually your sweat causing it. Sweat on its own is colorless. The yellow stain forms when aluminum salts react with proteins in your sweat and oxidize over time, creating a compound that bonds to fabric fibers. It shows up most on light-colored fabrics, and once it's set in, regular detergent often can't fully lift it. That's a different, stickier problem than an ordinary sweat mark.

Skin irritation is another common issue, and it isn't unique to aluminum. Either deodorant or antiperspirant can irritate skin, especially formulas with added fragrance or dyes, or when applied right after shaving. And because antiperspirants are designed to stay put and keep working, some people notice more product buildup on their skin over the course of the day.

Why Raw Sugar Formulates Without Aluminum

We formulate our Simply Deo line without aluminum, and without baking soda, talc, propylene glycol, parabens, phthalates, or synthetic dyes. That's a deliberate choice, not an accident: skipping aluminum means no fabric-staining residue building up in your favorite shirts, and skipping baking soda, a common irritant in a lot of natural deodorants, means one less thing for sensitive skin to react to.

Instead, our formulas lean on ingredients like magnesium to help combat odor and arrowroot powder to absorb moisture and sweat, doing the job baking soda would without the irritation some people experience from it. It's part of what we mean when we call our formulas clean. Read more about our approach in Why Clean Ingredients Matter.

What to Expect When You Switch

If you're used to an antiperspirant, switching to deodorant takes a little adjustment. Your sweat glands essentially wake back up after being temporarily blocked, so it's normal to notice more sweat than you're used to for the first week or two while your body finds its new normal.

A few tips to make the switch easier: reapply midday if you need to, especially at first, and give it a couple of weeks before deciding whether it's working for you. Most people find their body settles into a new rhythm, and normal sweating isn't the same thing as odor, since a good deodorant is still working to neutralize that.
