Shampoo and Conditioner for Curly Hair: What to Look For and What to Skip

women smiling at camera in front of blue sky

If you have curls, you’ve probably owned at least one shampoo that promised “bouncy, defined curls” and delivered a frizz halo that showed up in every photo for a month. It’s not you. It’s what’s in the bottle.

The internet has no shortage of “best shampoo for curly hair” lists. This isn’t one of them. Instead, here’s how to read a bottle and know whether it’s right for your curls, so you can stop buying, trying and quietly donating half-used bottles to your roommate.

Why Curly Hair Needs a Different Kind of Shampoo and Conditioner

Short answer: curls are naturally drier and more fragile than straight hair, so the wrong formula either strips them or weighs them down.

Here’s why. The natural oil your scalp produces slides easily down a straight strand. On a curl, it has to navigate every bend, so less of it makes it to your ends. Each bend is also a spot where the cuticle (the hair’s protective outer layer) is more likely to lift, which lets moisture escape. That’s why curly hair tends to feel dry, frizz easily and tangle more.

So curly hair needs two things from a shampoo and conditioner: a cleanse that doesn’t strip what little oil your curls have, and conditioning that adds moisture without leaving behind heavy buildup that flattens your curl pattern. Get those two right and everything else in your routine gets easier.

Ingredients to Look For in Curly Hair Shampoo and Conditioner

Gentle cleansers

Look for a shampoo formulated without SLS/SLES. Instead of those harsh detergents, gentler cleansers often show up on labels as Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Decyl Glucoside, Coco-Glucoside or Cocamidopropyl Betaine. They lather less dramatically, and that’s fine. Foam is not a performance metric.

Moisturizing oils and butters

Coconut Oil helps moisturize, Shea Butter nourishes, and Avocado Extract enhances shine. These are the ingredients that give curls the softness and slip they need, especially in conditioner.

Rosemary and Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar helps balance pH, and Rosemary helps support scalp health. Together they make a curly hair shampoo that cleans without feeling like it’s stripping everything in sight. This is the combo behind The Mighty Curl Shampoo, crafted with Avocado Extract, Apple Cider Vinegar and Rosemary. It gently cleanses and helps remove buildup without weighing down curls, so your natural curl pattern can shine through.

Its partner, The Mighty Curl Conditioner, adds Coconut Oil to the mix to help nourish, soften and hydrate hair for the look of frizz-free, beautifully defined curls.

Papaya and Coconut for deeper conditioning

For your weekly mask and leave-in, Papaya Extract helps soften and revitalize, while Coconut Oil and Shea Butter bring the moisture. More on those below.

Humectants

Ingredients like Glycerin and Pro-Vitamin B5 (Panthenol) help hair hold on to moisture. Pro-Vitamin B5 also smooths and softens, which curls appreciate.

Ingredients to Skip, and Why SLS/SLES Matters

SLS and SLES

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are strong detergents that create big, satisfying foam. The problem is that they can strip curls of the natural oils they’re already short on, which can make frizz and dryness worse. If you’ve ever felt your curls go crunchy and squeaky right after washing, this is a likely reason. Get the full story in our guide to SLS vs. SLES, and look for formulas labeled “formulated without SLS/SLES.”

Silicones

Silicones (look for names ending in “-cone,” “-conol” or “-siloxane,” like Dimethicone) coat the hair to make it feel smooth and shiny right away. The catch is that some silicones don’t rinse out well with gentle cleansers, so they can build up over time. On curls, that buildup can weigh down your pattern, make hair feel coated and keep moisture from getting in. Many curly routines skip them for that reason, and The Mighty Curl collection is formulated without silicones.

Drying alcohols and heavy waxes

Alcohol Denat. or SD Alcohol high on the list of a styler can leave curls feeling parched. (Fatty alcohols like Cetearyl Alcohol are different, and they’re helpful in conditioners.) Heavy waxes and mineral oil in rinse-off products can also linger and dull your curls over time.

And while they’re not curl-specific, The Mighty Curl Shampoo and Conditioner are also formulated without parabens, phthalates and synthetic dyes.

Clarifying vs. Daily Shampoo for Curls

A clarifying shampoo for curly hair isn’t a replacement for your regular wash. It’s more like a reset button.

Your regular wash

This is the gentle shampoo you use every wash day, whether that’s once a week or three times. Its job is to clean your scalp without stripping your curls. The Mighty Curl Shampoo is built for this.

When to clarify

Reach for a clarifying shampoo when your curls are sending signals like these:

  • They feel limp, coated or greasy even right after washing

  • Products seem to sit on top of your hair instead of sinking in

  • Your curls won’t hold definition like they used to

  • You’ve been swimming, using a lot of styling product, or living with hard water

Raw Sugar’s The Deep Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo (Charcoal + Matcha) gently removes build-up and refreshes hair to a weightless, healthier-looking state. It’s designed for weekly use, and curls that run dry may not need it that often, so clarify when your hair tells you to. Always follow a clarifying wash with conditioner or a hair mask.

Layering Conditioner, Mask, and Leave-In for Best Results

Curls do best with layers of moisture, each with its own job. Here’s how they stack up:

  1. Shampoo. Massage The Mighty Curl Shampoo into wet hair, starting at the scalp. Rinse with cool water.

  1. Condition. Squeeze out excess water, then work The Mighty Curl Conditioner from your ends up toward the roots. This is the best time to finger-detangle or use a wide-tooth comb, while your curls are slippery. Leave it in for a few minutes for extra conditioning, then rinse.

  1. Mask (once or twice a week). After shampoo and conditioner, apply The Mighty Curl Hair Mask generously from roots to ends. Crafted with Coconut Oil, Shea Butter and Papaya Extract, it hydrates and helps tame frizz for touchably soft, bouncy curls. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse.

  1. Leave-in. Finish with The Mighty Curl Leave-In Conditioner. Infused with Pro-Vitamin B5 and crafted with Coconut Oil, Shea Butter and Papaya Extract, it helps tame frizz and smooth split ends for bounce and shine. Apply a dollop to damp or dry hair, don’t rinse, and style as usual.
