Trick or Healthy Treat?

It’s that time of the year… pumpkins, scary costumes, terrifying props, and even spookier treats! It’s not just the costumes and props that have us spooked this time of the year… but the sugar overload! Although Halloween brings some exciting and fun traditions with it every year, maybe it’s time to substitute the unhealthy part of the celebrations. Don’t worry, we promise parents and kiddies alike will love these healthy treats. Have a look at our top healthy substitutions for this Halloween:

1. Replace artificial fruit candies with Dark Chocolate Covered Apples
Real fruit – check.
Antioxidant-rich dark chocolate – check.
This simple yet effective healthy treat will have both parents and children satisfied!
Directions: Insert sticks into the top of the apples after removing their stems. Melt dark chocolate by pouring it into a smaller metal bowl and place into a larger pot of boiling water stir intermittently. Once the chocolate has melted, take each apple, dip and rotate until all sides are covered in chocolate. Place on a tray lined with parchment and set in the fridge to cool.

2. Replace colorful candies like Candy Corn with real Roasted Veggies
Fake corn… be gone! We’re all about real, raw and healthy! Replicate the colorful patterns kids love seeing during Halloween with some of your favorite in-season vegetables. Directions: Select seasonal vegetables like pumpkins, potatoes or beetroot and bake just before they start changing color. Pair with delicious homemade dips like hummus or tzatziki for the ultimate healthy Halloween snack! Don’t forget to cut them into some fun Halloween shapes!


3. Replace sugar overloaded snacks with Halloween themed Banana Popsicles

Hot tip: drizzle with your favorite toppings like peanut butter, dark chocolate, nut flakes, and coconut to add some excitement!
Directions: Peel bananas and slice each in half, across. Slice each half in half again vertically, so that you have 4 long, narrow pieces total. Insert a popsicle stick into the bottom of each, then place then on parchment paper and store them in the freezer. Once the bananas are frozen, dip them into Greek yogurt, and return them onto the parchment paper. Place 2 mini chocolate chips on each of the bananas for eyes and return to the freezer to set. Voila! The cutest ghosts are ready to eat!

4. Replace berry flavored treats with the real spooky looking deal; Strawberry Ghosts

It’s the spooky homemade healthy treat the whole family can enjoy!

Directions: Melt white chocolate by inserting pouring into a small metal bowl. Place the metal bowl into a larger pot of boiling water and stir intermittently. Dip strawberries one at a time in melted chocolate – make sure to drag out some of the chocolate on the bottom to make a ghost ‘tail’. Set on parchment paper and place chocolate chips on the front of the strawberries for eyes. Place in freezer to set. Spooky but sweet!

5. Replace hard candies with soft, fresh and sweet Halloween themed Fruit Skewers

An oldie but a goodie, the sky’s the limit with this one! Get creative – embellish skewers with Halloween themed decor and designs, or decorate fruits with googly dark chocolate chip ‘eyes’ and fake berry blood.

Directions: Soak skewers in warm water for up to 10 minutes, then slice up desired fruit in bite-sized pieces. Start skewering fruits in the desired pattern – repeat as necessary. Decorate, decorate, decorate!
