Hair Porosity Test: How to Find Yours in 60 Seconds

Hair Porosity Test: How to Find Yours in 60 Seconds

What Is Hair Porosity

Hair porosity is just a fancy way of describing how well your hair absorbs and holds onto moisture. It comes down to your cuticle, the outer layer of every strand, and how open or closed it sits. A tightly sealed cuticle makes it harder for moisture to get in (or out). A more open cuticle lets moisture rush in, and then rush right back out just as fast.

Porosity is the reason two people can use the exact same shampoo and get completely different results. It is also usually the reason your hair feels unmanageable no matter what you throw at it. Once you know your porosity, the frizz, the dryness, and the buildup all start to make a lot more sense.

How Porosity Affects Your Hair's Health and Manageability

Porosity shapes almost everything about how your hair behaves day to day, from how long it takes to dry to how often you're fighting frizz. Here's what to look for.

Signs of Low Porosity Hair

Low porosity hair is protective by nature. That tightly sealed cuticle keeps moisture out, which sounds great until you realize it also keeps your conditioner out.

  • Water and product tend to sit on top of your strands instead of soaking in
  • Hair takes a long time to air-dry
  • Buildup shows up fast, even when you're using a light hand with product

Signs of High Porosity Hair

High porosity hair does the opposite. That more open cuticle lets water and product in quickly, but lets them right back out just as fast.

  • Hair absorbs water and product almost instantly
  • It also dries out just as fast, leading to frizz and dryness
  • Breakage shows up more often
  • Color, heat styling, or chemical treatments are usually part of the story, since they're what lifted the cuticle in the first place

How to Test Your Hair Porosity in 60 Seconds

Forget the guesswork. The float test tells you almost everything you need to know, and it takes less time than picking a shower playlist.

  1. Pull a few strands of clean, product-free hair. Shed hair from your brush works fine, just make sure there's no leftover product on it.
  2. Fill a glass with room-temperature water.
  3. Drop the strands in and leave them alone for 2 to 4 minutes. No poking, no swirling.
  4. Check where they land: floats near the top means low porosity, hovers or sinks slowly to the middle means medium porosity, sinks straight to the bottom means high porosity.

Quick disclaimer: this is a helpful at-home read on your hair, not a lab-grade diagnostic. Think of it as a starting point, not a final verdict.

Caring for Your Hair Based on Porosity

Once you know what you're working with, you can stop guessing and start treating your hair the way it actually needs.

If You're Low Porosity

Less is more here. Heavy formulas are the most common reason low porosity hair ends up weighed down with buildup, since that sealed cuticle can't absorb them and they just sit on the surface. Read Is It OK to Use Synthetic Conditioners to see why lighter formulas tend to work better for this hair type.

If You're High Porosity

Moisture is the name of the game here, and so is locking it in before it escapes. A leave-in conditioner is your best friend since it keeps hydrating your hair long after you've left the shower. The Multi-Miracle Leave-In Conditioner + Heat Protectant in Coconut + Agave is built for exactly this: it helps detangle and tame frizz while delivering lightweight silky hydration, and helps provide protection against heat damage if you're reaching for a blow dryer or hot tool. It's also gentle on color-treated hair, which matters if color is part of why your porosity is high in the first place.
